DJ Q&A: Steve Lawler
This month we welcome our dear friend, world renowned DJ Steve Lawler to our humble home!
STEVE we love seeing you in Ibiza and all the other exotic locations you play, but we are more excited to welcome you back to SF. You haven’t been here in a few years and it’s about time you returned! We know we are in for a special treat!
You are still our reigning KING of the SPACE TERRACE! Where will you be playing this year on the white isle?
This year I’m doing something I have never done in Ibiza EVER. I’m headlining shows in different venues every week in Ibiza for 22 weeks straight. So I guess you could say I’m a resident but not at only 1 night. In fact I don’t think this has been done by anyone before. I’m playing a mixture of shows for Paradise @ DC10, Music On @ Amnesia, Ants @ Ushauia, Elrow @ Amnesia, Labyrinth @ Pacha, Abode @ Amnesia, along with 3 Warriors shows, 1 at Gala Park a large 4000 cap outdoor venue and 2 at Amnesia in the main room.
Wow! That’s amazing! We are huge fans of WARRIORS. What does WARRIORS mean to you?
It’s one of these things that for me represents the true essence of what clubbing is. It’s not just another brand name its much more, everything about Warriors is bursting with the deep down dirty truth of losing yourself to music in a loud room with flashing lights where we leave all our inhibitions and let loose, hedonism at its finest!
Ha! Hedonism is a great description. We are all WARRIORS on the dance floor at HALCYON! We don’t like to ever stop! What’s the longest you have ever played and where?
I think around 18 hours split over 3 shows, main gig then 2 after parties. But I think 1 continuous set was around 12 hours at the infamous Twilo in NY.
That must have been epic! Speaking of TWILO, you’ve been doing some insane B2B sets with great artists such as Danny Tenaglia. What draws you to the B2B format?
I’m not always a big fan of B2B sets because you don’t get chance to tell your story. I feel the real art, the true art of DJ’ing is taking people on a musical journey, that’s not really possible when your playing B2B with someone else because a lot of the time when you’re playing, you may play certain tracks in the mix that only serve a purpose to make the next track that comes in have some impact. That being said playing B2B can be fun, definitely something I prefer at after parties. As far as playing with DT that was a big tick off my personal bucket list as to me he is a true REAL DJ that has given me much inspiration over the years.
We love your sets. You never know where they’ll take you, and your sound is so specific, so unique to you. You continue to standout, even with so much new talent out there today. To what do you attribute your longevity?
Love, Passion, Hunger, Drive.. I eat, breath and sleep electronic music, it runs through me like blood. Not a day passes where I’m not listening to new music, or digging out old music to re-edit, thinking about music, talking about music. It’s just simply who I am. I wouldn’t recognize myself without it being so heavily present in my life.
It IS obvious how passionate you are about music. And we know you’re not stopping anytime soon! You’ve slayed us more than once on the dance floor. We can’t wait to have you in SF and show you some Halcyon Hospitality!
And honestly I can’t wait. I have a long love for San Fran! The city has long been sincere with its love for house music. And I have always only and ever been welcomed with open arms. See you on the dance floor xx
